Frequently Asked Questions
Honest answers to common questions about colonic hydrotherapy
General Questions
What is colonic hydrotherapy?
Colonic hydrotherapy, also called colonic irrigation or colonics, is a gentle cleansing of the large intestine using warm, filtered water. It’s performed by a qualified therapist using specialized equipment to help remove accumulated waste material and support digestive health.
Is colonic hydrotherapy safe?
Yes, when performed by a qualified, experienced therapist using proper equipment and protocols. We are RICTAT registered, fully insured, and follow strict safety and hygiene standards. All equipment is FDA-approved and maintained to the highest specifications.
Does it hurt?
No, the procedure should not be painful. You may experience mild cramping or pressure sensations as the water moves through the colon, but this is generally brief and manageable. Most clients find the treatment surprisingly comfortable and even relaxing.
How long does a session take?
Unlike rushed clinics, we allow plenty of time – typically 60-90 minutes for your first session. This includes consultation, the actual treatment (usually 45-60 minutes), and aftercare discussion. We never rush appointments.
Before Treatment
How do I prepare for my appointment?
Preparation is simple. Eat normally in the days before, but avoid heavy meals on the day of treatment. Drink plenty of water. We provide detailed preparation instructions when you book. There’s no need for extreme fasting or special diets.
Should I eat on the day of treatment?
Yes, but keep it light. Have a normal breakfast if your appointment is in the afternoon, but avoid large, heavy meals shortly before treatment. Stay hydrated throughout the day.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Just yourself! We provide everything you need. You might want to bring a book or music for relaxation during treatment, but it’s not necessary.
Who should not have colonic hydrotherapy?
Colonic hydrotherapy is not suitable for people with certain conditions including active inflammatory bowel disease, severe hemorrhoids, recent abdominal surgery, kidney disease, severe heart conditions, or pregnancy. We conduct a thorough health screening to ensure treatment is safe for you.
During Treatment
What happens during a session?
You’ll change into a gown in private, then lie comfortably on the treatment table. A small, lubricated speculum is gently inserted, and warm filtered water flows into the colon. Waste material is eliminated through a closed system – everything is private, dignified, and odor-free. The therapist monitors and adjusts throughout.
Will I be exposed or embarrassed?
No. Your privacy and dignity are paramount. You’re covered with a sheet throughout, and our closed-system equipment ensures everything is discrete and odor-free. The treatment room is completely private.
Can I talk during the session?
Absolutely! Some clients like to ask questions and chat, while others prefer to relax quietly. Whatever makes you most comfortable is fine. The therapist will explain what’s happening and check in regularly.
After Treatment
How Will I feel afterwards?
Most people feel lighter, less bloated, and energized. Some experience mild fatigue on the day of treatment as the body adjusts. You can return to normal activities immediately, though we recommend taking it easy for the rest of the day.
What should I eat after treatment?
Start with light, easily digestible foods. Soup, steamed vegetables, fruit, and lean protein are ideal. Avoid heavy, processed, or very spicy foods for 24 hours. We provide detailed aftercare guidance.
Will I need to stay near a toilet?
Most elimination happens during the treatment itself. Some people have additional bowel movements in the hours following, but this is generally mild and manageable. You can go about your normal day.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies by individual and your specific goals. Some people find benefit from a single session. We’ll discuss your needs during consultation and make honest recommendations – we never push unnecessary treatments.
Health & Safety
Will colonic hydrotherapy damage my gut bacteria?
The treatment primarily affects the large intestine, where most gut bacteria reside. While some bacteria may be flushed out, they replenish quickly. Probiotic supplementation may be advised if we thought it would be beneficial to support healthy bacterial balance.
Can I have treatment during my period?
Yes, it’s perfectly safe to have treatment during menstruation. Some women actually find it helpful for reducing period-related bloating and discomfort.
What if I have IBS or other digestive conditions?
Many people with IBS find colonic hydrotherapy helpful, but it depends on the individual. We’ll discuss your specific condition during consultation to determine if treatment is appropriate. Some conditions may be contraindicated.
Are your therapists qualified?
Yes. Our therapist has over 30 years of clinical healthcare experience and 20 years specializing in colonic hydrotherapy. We are RICTAT registered (one of the UK’s leading professional bodies), fully insured, and DBS checked.
